WHAT DOES THIS MAMA’S DAY MEAN FOR US?
Mother’s Day started as a day to show the power of mamas, with the founders launching a call for mothers to unite in promoting a world without war and violence. This year for Mamas Day, we honor that tradition by celebrating the power of our movement mamas whether they be queer mamas fighting for recognition of their families, immigrant mamas fighting to keep their families together, trans mamas holding down chosen families, or incarcerated mamas fighting against the ways the prison industrial complex attacks their families.
This event brings together organizations actively fighting against gender violence and the criminalization of survivors, to celebrate mamas We know that Mamas day is a time that can be especially painful for mothers, caregivers behind bars, and their loved ones. We invite you to come and join the fight for against gender violence in Queens and beyond, to celebrate powerful mamas in community, and to send a card that communicates care and solidarity for incarcerated mamas, to let them know that they are not forgotten.
We will have time to write letters, hear from each participating organization on how we've been working against carceral and gender violence in our communities, learn about the connection between domestic violence and prisons, and have arts and dance performances. We will open and close the space with a ritual to honor mother earth and the four directions, and have a community member available throughout the event to provide healing and emotional support.
Please join us on this day! We will supply the cards (beautifully designed by Forward Together artists), envelopes, addresses, and snacks. There will also be childcare and Spanish interpretation available. Donated stamps are greatly appreciated!
