Educational Justice

Pipeline

The summer of 2004 saw the lowest youth employment rate in NYC in over two decades. While youth struggle to get a decent education and jobs for teens are at an all-time low, funding for jails and detention centers continue to increase. G.A.P. youth spent the summer exploring this connection and produced a creative reflection on this enduring problem.

Set Up

This video questions why people leave school or fail to graduate. Rather than focusing on the more commonly held idea of "drop outs," the video examines the trends of push-outs, and the many ways that young people feel discouraged by the educational system. Interviewing educational researchers, students, and each other, we try to present the stories behind the statistics.

Unsockumented

Leaving high school is a stressful time in any young person's life, even more so for those living in the United States without documentation. "Unsockumented" uses dark humor to explore some of the challenges that these youth face.

3 Queer Mice

This short animation is a remake of the nursery rhyme Three Blind Mice. We find three very queer mice in a lot of trouble when their rights are being violated. Based on real stories.

Aliens vs. Predators

Each year 60,000 undocumented immigrants graduate from high schools across the United States. With recruiters falling short of their targets and casualties mounting in Iraq and Afghanistan, these young people are increasingly being targeted by military recruiters. Aliens Vs Predators is an uncompromising call for justice from a diverse group of young immigrants in New York City.

Isa's Final Draft

A story about Isabella, a young woman instilled with the dreams of her mother's sacrifices for her daughter to have a better life by accessing education opportunities she never had. This is Isa's journey as she encountered struggles that neither she or her mother ever imagined.

This film was inspired by the true stories of immigrant students. Each year nearly 65,000 youth graduate from high schools without higher education opportunities. Featured at the end of this film is an interview with a Dreamer from the Trail of Dreams campaign.

That Aint Right

That Aint Right captures the work of Urban Youth Collaborative (UYC), a coalition of student-led activists who are involved in the struggle to change NYC public high schools. Through UYCs local and city-wide organizing, youth are changing school policies that directly affect them.
